Ohio PIRG Urges Obies to Volunteer
To the Editors:
The American Community Survey reports that in 2006, 14 percent
of Lorain county individuals were living below the poverty line. Issues
of hunger and homelessness are exacerbated for many due to the nation's
current financial situation and housing problems. Ohio PIRG is
spearheading the Month of Service, which provides numerous
opportunities to those who want to become long-term activists against
hunger and homelessness, as well as those who are interested in
contributing a few hours for our community. With Thanksgiving right
around the corner, why not pitch in to help those in need? A few hours
go a long way.
You can volunteer any time through the first week of December,
but why not start this weekend? Are you interested in construction or
painting? Help with the Habitat for Humanity project on Pleasant Street
this Saturday. Enjoy staying up late? Get trained to work with the
Interfaith Hospitality Network. You can volunteer to stay overnight in
churches with homeless families, hang out with kids and help out with
meals. Maybe you'd like to work in a food bank or food pantry. Maybe
you want to help homeless children with their reading skills. Maybe you
want to play poker with the elderly. Here's your chance to do any of
these things and more.
E-mail benjamin.bergstein@oberlin.edu and watch for tabling in
Wilder to learn about the Month of Service projects, and to set up a
time to volunteer. Make a difference and have a great time.
