OBERLIN — A group of students at Oberlin College have found a somewhat different, yet timely way to petition Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur.
Students
in the college's chapter of the Ohio Public Interest Research Group
made Valentine's Day cards containing messages like "Renewable energy,"
"B Green" and "Green jobs" to send to Kaptur. Before they send them
though, they were having students sign them.
Lizzy Kozak, Ohio
PIRG's campus organizer, said the cards were to thank Kaptur for
supporting global warming legislation and to encourage her to continue
doing so.
One of their goals, she explained, is to get
legislation passed for things like clean cars and renewable energy that
will reduce carbon emissions, among other things.
"We're trying
to raise awareness about the urgency and the need for climate change
legislation," sophomore Pete Sabo said. Making Valentines was a
"polite, friendly way" to establish a relationship with the
congresswoman, he added.
Kaptur will be the only representative
that gets the Valentine's Day cards, he added, explaining that they
have the biggest connection to her since she represents Oberlin.
The
goal was to gather 100 signatures, Kozak said. By the time the
three-hour drive was done, they had 318 signatures from students and
faculty.
"It was very successful," she said.
